Garage door springs are tensed so that they can move the door and keep it open. Depending on the spring's type, the coils develop torque or stretch and contract and work together with the cables in order to pull the door open and lower it down. Residential doors have either one torsion spring or a pair of extension springs unless they are extremely heavy in which case they would require more than one spring. Spring maintenance and adjustment are both important so that the door will continue to open with ease. Although most springs are manufactured to last for approximately ten thousand cycles, premature breakage is not unlikely especially if the environment is corrosive or the springs are damaged.Garage Door Springs in Florida

Extension and torsion springs

Springs are installed at different parts of the door depending on their type. Extension garage door springs are very common for residential application and are installed at the two sides of the door. They stretch above the tracks and counterbalance the door by pulling on the cables, which are connected to these types of springs with pulleys. When the door is shut, the spring coils are extended and that's how these springs got their name. With the coils stretched out, there is a lot of tension which is then used to open the door.

The other type is the torsion springs. Most residential doors only require one torsion spring installed. This is mounted above the door and its basic characteristic is that it has one stationary and one winding cone – one on each end. The former one doesn't move while the latter enables the spring to unwind and wind. As the spring is stretched out, torque is applied to the shaft which passes through it and is then transferred to the cables. Both types of springs are tensed and thanks to this tension the door remains open and moves up and down with ease.

Spring maintenance

Spring maintenance is necessary since it involves adjustment, as well as lubrication. Every time the springs open the door, they lose power. If they lose significant tension, they won't be able to move the door as they should. In this case, they will sag and move the door with some difficulty. Torsion spring adjustment is not easy. It requires the use of the right size winding bars to turn the winding cone as many times as necessary for the door to be balanced and the springs to be tensed. Extension springs are adjusted easier since it takes moving the cable s-hook closer or farther from the door to release or add tension.
